Every place has its own prominence in the history of the world. Chittoor town, ever since its evolution as a habitat, has made big strides in every field of human development. As the District headquarter, it stands tall as a prominent place in Rayalaseema region with its rich heritage and age old culture. It has produced prominent scholars and educationists such as Kattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy, the founder of Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, artists and actors like Chittoor Nagaiah, distinguished writers like Sankarambadi Sundarachari and Madhurantakam Rajaram, educationists like Prof. S.V.Rama Sarma, Prof. Vasudeva Reddy and G.N.Reddy,; Philosophers like Jiddu Krishnamoorthy and a host of freedom fighters, social workers, philanthropists, lawyers who had contributed to the development of the town and secured a place for it in the world map. Topographically, it is trilingual as it is situated in the borders of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The college was established in the year 1961 with Arts and Science groups. It was granted affiliation by Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati. Apart from the day courses, evening courses were also started in Arts and Commerce in 1966-67 in order to provide educational opportunities for the in-service employees. Initially, the college was named as ‘Government Arts and Science College’. It was renamed as “Govt. College’ after the introduction of commerce courses in the year 1971-72. The college was again named as PVKN. Govt. College in 1981-82 in commemoration of Sri Papudesi Venkata Krishnama Naidu (PVKN), a philanthropist and the founder president of the college committee. The college was inaugurated by Sri. D. Sanjeevaiah, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of AP in the presence of Sri Govindarajulu Naidu, former Vice-Chancellor of S.V.University, Tirupati. Temporary accommodation was provided in the old Judge’s Bungalow. The college was shifted to the spacious and sprawling campus at the outskirts of Chittoor in 1969.
The college was located in the midst of 112 acres of land surrounded by the hillocks in the serene atmosphere. Some portion of land was granted to NPS College for Women and Krishnaveni Jr. College. In addition to the conventional courses, restructured courses, relevant subjects like computer science, computer application, Micro-biology, Bio-technology, Bio-chemistry, Tax procedure and practice; Advertising sales promotion and sales management were added subsequently.
The long felt need of the public of Chittoor was fulfilled by the starting of Post Graduate courses in this college from the academic year 2001-02. At present, the following PG courses are taught ie., |
